Apache Httpd index.html

Apache is up and running using the defauly YDL install.  I have changed the rootdocument to /var/www/mysite.  However when I browse to www.mysite.com I am served the default apache test page.  If I browse to www.mysite.com/index.html the correct page is served.  I'm sure there is something simple that I am overlooking but I have not been able to find it.  So after a couple hours I admit I need help and let you folks have at it.
