Please, let me add some more precisions. "rpm -Uvh packagename" mean rpm
-(U)pdate (v)erbose (h)ash marks (Uvh...) while "rpm -ivh packagename"
mean rpm -(i)nstall (v)erbose (h)ash marks. If you are UPDATING a
package use "rpm -Uvh packagename" but if you want to INSTALL a package
use "rpm -ivh packagename" (note: these commands are CaSe SenSiTiVe) By
the way, you can start typing the package name then hit tab for
auto-completion-goodness ;)
using verbosity (v) will output stuffs like the filenames being
installed/updated and such. hash marks (h) will show you a progress-bar
of the operation.
these two options ('v' and 'h') does not need to be put together or used
at all thus they work well as a pair. Its as you see fit ;)
