Virtual Consoles wacked out

I know mingetty runs several tty instances and you can access them Alt 
Opt Fn combo. The key sequence isn't working on my ibook 3.0.1 ydl 
system. I'm stuck at the login prompt and I none of the terminals work 
but instead they show a blank screen and the f7(maybe f6) key get me 
back to the gui.

Anyone ever have this same problem?? Can anyone help me?
