Olaf, I had a similar experience awhile ago.  Power outage hosed my
6500/250 completeley.  When you boot off the CD you will get to the
install and after the install prompt it will say something like" OS
already detected on partition is this a repair?"  I was able to get
back into my file system and get my files, but nothing worked right
after that.  YUM was a big disaster, dependencies wera another. 
Overall, I was glad to get my files and I just completely reinstalled
on a new hard drive.  HTH
