There is no border area around the tiles.  There is a background colour
if the image has transparent areas or an alpha channel, and that
colour is white.  Strangely, it shows as black in the wallpaper
preview.

I'm guessing that either your image actually has a white border, or it
has a transparent border.  You could try editing your image in gimp,
adding a black background and merging the layers.
