[ydl-gen] RE: yellowdog-general Digest, Vol 17, Issue 21

Have another question.

I copied a disk using dd. The disk I copied is (80GB) from a G5 (Xserve) and put it in a G5 (Desktop) that had a 160GB disk.

I let it boot up to see what I'd get. This is the message:

Ata1 failed to respond (30 secs)
RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28!= 32768) 4194304
Kernel Panic - not syncing ufs: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

I put the disk back into the G5-Xserve and mounted the disk and checked the device path to see where root and boot were. I then umounted the disk and put it in the G5 desktop and interrupted the boot process and attempted to boot the new disk using the following:

Boot: linux root=/dev/sda3 but got the same thing above. With me being a newbie I'm sure I'm leaving something out. But first I guess I should ask is this even possible or am I better off just doing a cold install instead of a dd copy.

The reason for the dd copy is I want to mimic the other disk environment except of course for the hostname.

Thanks again you all, you've been very helpful.

Is there a command to check memory and swap in ydl like swapinfo in
HP-UX?

Thanks

Because YDL follows Red Hat rather closely, you should be able to apply
the following:

http://www.puschitz.com/
TuningLinuxForOracle.shtml#CheckingPhysicalMemory

Although the article discusses utilizing Oracle; this particular
section of that document also addresses checking physical memory and
swap space.

OK
Derick, you're right, I should learn this because I'm using linux.
With Linux I should use linux and with Mac os (9 os X) I should use
the Mac os(s). That said:
I dove right on it. Pdisk, that is. Here is what I have now after
deleting a few other partitions on the drive, creating a new partition
with the c command. I tried to i the partition map but it remains
the same

Partition map (with 512 byte blocks) on '/dev/sda'
#: type name length base ( size )
 1: Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
 2: Apple_UNIX_SVR2 sam 120103136 @ 64 ( 57.3G)

Device block size=512, Number of Blocks=120103200 (57.3G)
DeviceType=0x0, DeviceId=0x0

Command (? for help):

I know there is a way for me to specify a certain file system with "C"
command. I tried ext3 and that would not let me mount it. (A little on
the mount. I created a directory in mnt called sam. So I think my
mount command should be mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sam Is this right?)
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Yes, I have an Apple partition
map which I tried to initialize with the pdisk command "i" then I
wrote it with "w". For the Apple unix svr partition, I "c" ed that
one.
pdisk is really cool and very fast. I think I must be missing
something but don't know what.
Also, thanks for the lil boost for me sitting down and working with
pdisk rather than look for a workaround
     Thanks again

This looks really good for mounting other drives I have that are HFS+

Hey thanks for clearing that up. But I think I sorta knew what you
meant. It seems with the print command in pdisk all the correct
numbers are listed and I don't have to count them.
pdisk handles that very nicely
Thanks again for your time and all your help.

Hi all,

Quick message to know if it's possible during install process to
resize the macosx partition to install ydl. Thanks for advance for
the informations.

The short answer is that I haven't heard that this can be done
simultaneously during during an install of ydl.

One must either manipulate and change the OS X partitions first using
something like Drive Genius, finish that up and then continue onto
installing ydl or backup the OS X partition, format the drive for Linux
and for OS X (creating two different partitions), then proceed to
install ydl on the partition reserved for it. After that is done, then
one can reinstall the OS X system and associated files.
