  Don't (some? many?) PowerBooks support auto-MDIX?  It could be that it's 
a crossover cable when it should be straight-through, or vice-versa.

  If your PB falls under that description (G4 or later), then it likely 
only works due to the auto-MDIX capabilities.  Rewiring an end (if you 
have the requisite tools and skills), adding a crossover adapter to one 
end, or replacing the Cat5 cable (if it's a non-complicated installation, 
i.e., not through walls) ought to make it work for the PS3.  Off-hand, I 
know ThinkGeek sells an adapter:
