My failure occurred on a 1.8 GHz single processor (which uses air
cooling). If one searches the net, there are a huge number of very
scary stories about power supplies failing on many of the air cooled
G5s, sometimes in a very violent fashion (sounding like a rifle shot
and disrupting entire offices). Mine might have been loud (I wasn't
home when it happened), but the smell was awful and stayed in the
room for a very long time; also there was black charing all over the
machine and power supply. Replacing the supply wasn't as easy as it
could have been, from my experience with other Apple products (it fit
very awkwardly in the box).
cheers,
Warren Nagourney
