 Actually, the whole point of using yum is to remove dependencies, etc.. This 
has *always* been the point of yum. I don't know who gave you that advice, 
but they were clearly mistaken. Otherwise, if you do rpm -e packagename, but 
5 other packages require packagename, then you'll have to manually remove 
those as well. You certainly don't want to delete packages without deleting 
things that depend on them.

 So, yes, in some contexts, you might try to remove a package that will 
cripple your system should you follow all dependencies. The point there is 
*don't delete that package - your system needs it*.
