Hi Dene:

I became very interested in your problem because of past work I was involved
in.  However, I did some research for you which, I hope, you discover to be
useful as I found informative and provocative.

of the ext3 format:

As a strategy leading to a solution you may be more interested in the following
article which references a link to tools, both of which abide by various
incarnations of the open source concept:

1.  The Sleuth Kit - a set of forensic quality analytical tools.
2.  Foremost - developed by US Air Force Office of Special Investigations
