a bunch of newbie questions

Being a newbie myself i can only answer question 4:
mount a hfs partition as superuser

locate the device number: pdisk -l
mount device, e.g.: mount /dev/hdaXX todirectory
change privileges, owner, make an entry in /etc/fstab

to q.1: abiword prints out the same on my box (ibook2) ..
