Lombard - No Sound

I have had sound only once since installing and using YDL-2.3.

Everytime KDE boots up I get a message that says "Error initializing sound driver. /device/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device).  The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Machine is a PB G3 Lombard (333), 512 MB RAM, 32 GB Drive.  Otherwise, standard.  (Oh, I'm using an Apple optical mouse from a G4, but I have no sound regardless of whether I use it or not).
