Newbie Install...help with Yellow Dog Linux

try to type "linux single" at the boot prompt somewhere (there must be a 
way to pass arguments to the kernel at boot I think ). If that lets you 
boot , look in /etc/inittab for a line that reads "id:5:initdefault". 
Using a text editor (as root) change that 5 to a 3. Save and close. Then 
reboot and see if you can start in console mode. If so, you can mess 
around with startx and Xconfigurator(if it exists in YDL). If you can't 
get to a console in the way I described, then boot from a rescue floppy 
if you've got one (don't know if YDL uses 'em or not)
Runnin out of ideas...
