task panel restored

This is so inelegant, but it did work. Went to a console terminal
(through the Konquerer menu), launched kpanel which brought up the GNOME
panel at the bottom of the screen. Then I worked my way through to the
KDE menus, found the theme manager, went back to the default, logged
out, logged back in. Sheesh. Anyhow, I can't recommend it, but it worked.
