Does Yellow Dog Linux work with CPU accelerators?

Greetings:

New to Yellow Dog and Linux on the Mac. My 7300/200 has 1GB of RAM and
a 9GB HDD but KDE is pretty sluggish. Is there any way to improve the
performance? Will a CPU accelerator help or can Yellow Dog (and any
other Linux distrib. for that matter) NOT work with an accelerator?
