iBook 2001 Modem Woes

I grabbed YDL 2.1 at MacWorld and finally got around to putting it on my 
iBook 2001. Unfortunately, it can not find my modem at all. I searched the 
lists and it looks like a common problem, but there I can't seem to find an 
answer. I did read that setting the modem volume to off should help, but it 
did nothing. What's the secret?
