imac 15" (G3) / imac 17" (G4) YDL performance?

Assuming you aren't a heavy gamer or some other professional creator,
256 MB should be just fine. With memory as cheap as it is though, I
usually recommend at least 512 MB just so it's that much less likely
you'll have to resort to virtual memory. I haven't been using YDL for
very long, but it doesn't seem to require very much memory (compared to
Mac OS X) even with X-Windows.
About GUI performance comparisons, I don't see any serious GUI
performance problems on my computer with either OS X or YDL (with a
PowerMac 2x800Mhz, 1.5G RAM, 2x80G HD). The Mac OS X interface used to
be slow, but since Quartz Extreme was introduced and the graphics card
started handling a lot more of the drawing, I haven't had any
complaints. Aqua is a lot more polished, but it doesn't really matter
to me. Whatever works, I say, and they both work fine for me.

There shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't use the Apple keyboard.
