oeps, i recall there is a much easier way of getting to a
text only mode: type ctrl-alt-F1 and you'll switch from
the nutty X screen ("console 7") to one of the text-only
consoles 1 through 6 which should work ok. then you're
one step further though obviously not home yet.

but there is another good use of booting from a linux live cdrom:
if it works, it will have generated a good XF86Config,
and you can try copying it or cannibalizing it.

my only complaint about the YDL installation was that it
was unable to automatically configure the monitor in a situation
when it should have been easy: a completely standard, apple,
iBook (my case) or power book (yours).
