Installation Successful, but can't boot up

After about a week of partition issues, etc.  I was
finally able to do a dual partition with my mac & YDL
only to find that now i can't boot up linux.  it
starts loading up begins reading files (white letters
on black background) and then computer shuts off. it
happens every time when i try to start off linux but
will boot into os x with no problem.  i looked on th
site and someone with a similar problem was told to
change something on the hardrive/find out if the drive
was slave or something, but it wasn't too clear as to
what to look for, how to identify, and how to change,
if this is the problem I'm having which I am not sure.
