amsn problem install

I've just been to the FAQ site and Olaf Olson has done a better job than
me with "Creating an RPM from source". As a side note he suggest
"rpmbuild -ba" then talk about a SPECS file. I never say such file (??)
I used "rpmbuild -ta" instead and (still) got a working application and 
rpms, too. Is this a big deal?
