You should have three _massive_ files ending in .iso. Each disk image
is ~600 MB (alternately, you could buy a 6 CD set from the
yellowdoglinux store for 25 USD).

Instructions on downloading/burning are available at:
<http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/resources/ftp_mirrors.shtml>

You can download the ISOs from the URL below (and, any other mirrors
listed in the URL above) in case you didn't download the right stuff
from the folder:
<ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/yellowdog/iso/>

The three files named something like this:
yellowdog-3.0.1-sirius-20031118-install1.iso

Can't speak to the compatibility of your USB/FireWire card.

As for replacing the ethernet card: is there something wrong with it
(or does YDL not support the on-board ethernet?)?

Yep, your next step would be to burn the CDs. Also, make sure you
print off (or have on-hand on another computer ;) the quick & dirty
install instructions. I'm sure the listers can also help you with the
nitty gritty of how to format things. I've got three partitions on my
G3 (Old World... i.e. it too requires BootX) computer: #1 for OS 9
boot up, #2 for OS X 10.2 and #3 for Linux. You probably would only
need 100 MB for OS 8/9/whatever and the rest for YDL. The YDL
installer can hanlde the job of fomratting the Linux partition nicely
into the partitions need for Linux.

For what you're going to be trying you probably will want 4 GB to
install the kitchen sink.

Eric
