PPCNerds.org on YDL 4.0

I was encouraged by the article, so I gave it a try on my PowerBook G4, 1GB RAM. I had a perfectly running copy of 3.01 running, and now I have a marginally running copy of 4.0. I had some problems with Xwindows, until I did the Xautoconfig. I still have two problems. 

1) The Airport card is configured as eth0, and it's configuration fails at bootup. The built-in ethernet card (eth1) does not get an address, so I have to go into the network configuration and activate it. Can I switch eth0 with eth1 and make the built-in card active on start up?

2) I get an error message about the sound card:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT failed - Invalid argument
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

How do I fix these problems?
