YDL 4, problems with x window on install.

thanks Iain, i tried what you said, and altered the settings of the
XF86Config file to your suggestions, but it still didn't work. The
xserver did, however, send back an error report finally. and i was able
to see sorta what was going wrong (i think). it mentioned a working
configuration for the monitor could not be found, so i went back into
the Config file and changed the Vert Refresh to 60-75 (thinking, "isn't
this an average refresh rate for a monitor?") and kept the Horiz at your
values (40-60). i think changing the vert refresh rate values was a bad
thing to do. when i ran startx, it seemed like xwindow started up,
meaning the text prompt went away, and my computer ground away at
something, but nothing shows on the screen. it's completely blank.
now when i start up, it finishes booting, and then goes right to this
blank screen.
what did i do? should i just reinstall?

I don't know if the same will work for you, but I had the same problem
on my g3 500 imac...no matter what, I could not start xserver.

I eventually figured out that I had to edit my XF86Config file with
nano (located /etc/X11/XF86Config)

Then I went to the part that says Vert Refresh and Horizontal and
changed the # value beside Vert to: 30.5-48.5

                            Hor to: 40-60

then save it with control-x and then at the root prompt, try
startx......then make sure to go into your display settings in the KDE
or GNOME GUI and ensure the correct monitor, etc. are selected

Give that a try and see if it works!!
