thanks for these ideas. Hmmm. FWB disk tools lets you see the 
partitions and they don't look much different to the examples I've 
seen. There's no other strange things, just OS 9.1 on one drive and 
OS 8 on the other.
Maybe I will reformat the drive I want to use and try again.
