installing yellow dog from the cd

I have three imacs first editions. I tried to boot ydl knopix and debian.
Could not get the Imac to boot and was told that my generation of Imac
was notorious not booting from cd. 

I gave up. I have ordered ubuntu pwpc as a llast gasp.

If you have any success let me know.
