You can select packages to include or remove after you boot into e17 for
the first time. The first window you come into will have what appears
to be a menu bar. Select the blue circular symbol of yellow dog and then:

Applications --> Add/Remove Software

or

Applications --> System Tools --> Add/Remove Software

When you do the above a dialog box requesting the root or system admin
password will appear stating that you are attempting to run pirut.
Enter the password and as you select each category say YDL Desktop
Envionment then you select Optional Packages. When this is done then
you'll see a listing fond.u with brief explanations. Those already
checked are already installed... to remove them merely uncheck them.
Those not checked yet which interest you will be installed -- if you
check the box. Make your choices, click Close, then Apply.

There is a separate program for updates, also as easily discovered.
Choose that application later after pirut has done it's work at your
leisure. This doesn't have to be done immediately.

Good Luck....
