On 12 Oct, this message from Kevin B. Hendricks echoed through cyberspace:

I personally use a Promise Ultra66 (now superseeded by the Ultra100; no
experiences with that one) which works perfectly well under Linux. For
2.4 kernels it works out-of-the-box, for 2.2 kernels you _may_ need
kernel patches related to PCI IO space. Not sure; it's been a while
since I ran 2.2 kernels.

Keep in mind though that you can't boot from that card, since it has no
OF ROM. The Ultra100 should be equally well suported under Linux.

Also, there is an OEM version of the Promise _with_ an OF ROM so that it
is bootable. Can't remember the make & model, though. There are also a
few IDE boards that masquerade as SCSI devices, in order to make them
bootable. No experience whatsoever with those, though.

Well, there are three things to modern SCSI drives that make them
inapropriate for desktop machines: they are expensive, loud, and run
hot.

Older SCSI drives (just as older IDE's) are just too slow and too small.

Cheers
