You do not need to modify BootX; just the kernel.

The key to success in Linux is experimentation. If you wait for other people
to tell you what to do, it works out poorly on all sides.

Did you make sure your sound module is loaded

I didn't have a problem with floppies (when I still had one) other than the
drive itself dying. mount -t auto /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy? Your /etc/fstab has it
set to ext2; you may want to change that to auto.
